Blind Pass (Sanibel–Captiva)

Overview:
Blind Pass, the narrow waterway separating Sanibel and Captiva Islands, is one of the most dynamic and productive fishing locations in the region. Strong tidal flow creates a natural funnel for baitfish and a prime ambush zone for predatory species.

Target Species:

  • Snook
  • Redfish
  • Sheepshead
  • Mangrove Snapper
  • Black Drum
  • Pompano
  • Spotted Seatrout
  • Tarpon (seasonal)

Seasonal Highlights:

  • Spring and early summer bring increased Snook and Tarpon activity.
  • Fall and winter favor Sheepshead, Snapper, and Black Drum.
  • Pompano runs peak during transitional months (spring and fall).

Tactics:

  • Drift live Pinfish or Threadfins along current seams.
  • Use heavier weight rigs to maintain bait presentation in fast-moving water.
  • Employ pop-cork rigs for Trout and Pompano in midwater zones.
  • Fly anglers have success using Clouser Minnows and chartreuse Mullet patterns for Snook.

Effective Baits and Lures:

  • Live: Pinfish, shrimp, greenbacks
  • Cut: Threadfin herring, Ladyfish, mullet
  • Artificial: Spoons, topwater plugs, soft plastics, streamer flies

Additional Tips:
Timing is critical at Blind Pass. Fish the hour before and after peak tides for best results. Structure such as bridge pilings and deeper channels near the pass are especially productive during outgoing tides.
